HOW TO GET HERE
Getting to Casa Elemento can be a bit of a challenge depending on the method of transportation you choose. Let's face it, you've travelled across Colombia, maybe even South America, so finding one of the best hostels in the nation shouldn't be that hard for you.......although it can require a bit of determination. The cheaper the method of transportation you choose the more challenging it can be to get here......so choose the method that suits you and your travel partners best. The first thing you need to do is get to Santa Marta or Minca. Please take a moment to review this section in detail.
PRIVATE HIRE 4X4 JEEP
One of our drivers will pick you up from your hostel, the beach, the airport or wherever you are in Santa Marta, Taganga or Rodadero and bring you and up to six guests to Casa Elemento DIRECT.
Unless you are walking the entire way, this option will cost you slightly more than taking collectivos and motos (see below) . It works best with 4-7 people and that starts at 120,000 COP for the group . The price does not change with a bigger group, however, you can hire the Jeep for one or two people if you are willing to pay the minimum 120,000 COP.
You will have the option to make a stop along the way at an ATM, bring a beverage or two, take photos, and basically sit back and relax. From Santa Marta to Casa Elemento takes, approx 1.5 hrs. It's slightly longer and costs a little more if you are coming from one of the other destinations previously mentioned. Any trip after dark (6pm) will always have a surcharge. We can also organize your transport back down the mountain on your check out day.

colectivos & moto-taxis
This is the authentic are real way to go, giving you a unique experience of the north coast of Colombia's people culture and customs. It's a wild ride. Enjoy!
A 'Colectivo' is a shared taxi you can get from the market in Santa Marta. Pick up depot is located on Calle 11 con Carrera 12, downtown Santa Marta. It is very easy to find. Once your close, if your Spanish is limited simply keep repeating Minca to anyone that will listen.......follow their pointing and it should only take a second or two. It costs 8.000 COP and takes 45 mins
Now your in Minca, hop on a Minca-Moto. Look out for their colorful jackets.
The Moto-Taxi in this part of the world is the preferred public transport option for most people because it's faster and cheaper. You can take a moto taxi for one person and a bag from Yucal (on the outskirts of Santa Marta). Get a taxi from anywhere in Santa Marta to Yucal for 7.000 COP
Once in Minca, continue with your same moto-taxi driver or take a break, grab a beer or some food, then take another moto when you are ready.
Top Tip....Local 'Mincero' moto taxi drivers tend to be much better drivers, especially on the roads heading up into the jungle, out of town.
Moto-Taxi Yucal (Santa Marta) - Minca = 8.000 COP, 25 mins
Moto-Taxi Minca - Casa Elemento = 20.000 COP, 30 mins
The cheapest and most beautiful routes of them all. There are two hiking routes to get to Casa Elemento. They will both take you approximately two to three hours and cost nothing but time and effort.
The first hike follows the dirt road that heads out of town. Start at the church in Minca, head out of town, past the football pitch and continue straight, out of town and up to us. Easy...and beautiful.
The second hike starts off the same but then diverts at Marinka waterfalls where you can take a small trail that winds up to us through coffee plantations and virgin jungle.
We advise stopping at 'La Fuente' pub and restaurant on the way up (45 min after Minca) for a refeshing pitstop and information gathering. It's also where our friends at DC Bushcraft and Survival (link here) are based.
Once refreshed, head up the road to Marinka waterfalls and then follow signs for 'La Semilla'. The road will continue until the river where the trail starts. From here walk up past 'La Semilla' and follow the signs for 'Los Pinos' and then 'Casa Elemento'
The second option is harder and longer but more beautiful. We advise that you leave your large bags in Minca or Santa Marta
